GCSE in BSL - Pitch to Rich 2015

Signature wants to ensure that more people in the UK, both deaf and hearing, learn British Sign Language (BSL). As part of this aim we have developed a GCSE in BSL, which will be piloted by a selection of schools in September of this year.  

BSL (Scotland) Bill gains the support of the Education and Culture Committee

Support for the BSL (Scotland) bill increased significantly yesterday, with the announcement that it has gained the backing of the Education and Culture Committee. Members called for the Scottish Parliament to support the bill when it is debated in Holyrood next Tuesday.

Funding update

We have  been informed by the Skills Funding Agency that the following qualifications will now appear in the 2015-2016 brochure as eligible for funding:

  • Level 1 Award in British Sign Language
  • Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language
  • Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language

DCAL research event

A one day research dissemination event aimed at teachers of deaf children will be taking place on 11 June 2015 in the Social Science building at City University London.

Deaf sector pulls together ahead of general election

Organisations concerned with deafness and hearing loss will be working collectively to influence the next government following agreement of a statement of common purpose (attached).

Organisations from all sectors are now being asked to become founder signatories and promote the statement.

A campaign will be launched after the general election to raise awareness of the problems faced by people who are deaf or have a hearing loss and the solutions the sector is pursuing.

A one day course about BSL linguistics for BSL tutors

The course aims to give BSL teachers basic background training on the linguistics of BSL.
